Everglades Restoration Update
On February 18, Everglades Foundation CEO Eric Eikenberg and Senior Scientist Steve Davis gave their annual public presentation to Ocean Reef to provide an update on the progress being made in restoration.
Highlights included:
1. 2.5 miles of Tamiami Trail bridge construction to allow more water to run from north Tamiami south into Everglades Park is completed.
2. New reservoir south of the lake fully designated and awaiting permits.
3. State government has committed 250 million/year and the Federal Government has agreed to match their funds to start construction of the reservoir.
4. Government restoration funds for the next five years have been generally agreed to but will require annual
appropriation.
As a special treat, National Geographic photographer and renowned lecturers Mac Stone and Carlton Ward wowed a full house at the Cultural Center with their amazing photographs and video adventures in the Everglades in pursuit of the rare ghost orchid. Mac and Carlton received a standing ovation at the end of their presentation. This event was sponsored by the Ocean Reef Cultural Center and the Ocean Reef Conservation Association.
