How’s the Weather Down There?
New Automated Weather Observing System Operational at Airport
As one of the Club’s most unique amenities, upholding the safety of the Ocean Reef Airport is of great importance. That is why the Club is excited that last month, the Ocean Reef Airport completed the final stage in a long-awaited safety initiative.
After achieving a series of local, state and federal agency approvals, the Ocean Reef Club Airport is now home to a FAA-certified Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS).
Implementation of this new system imparts a major boost to Airport safety by providing pilots with continuous, minute-by-minute snapshots of current weather conditions at the Ocean Reef Club Airport, known to aviation enthusiasts by its Airport Identifier, 07FA. Prior to installation of the AWOS, pilots had to rely on the weather report from the Miami Executive Airport, located 40 miles north of Ocean Reef Club and therefore, unable to guarantee an accurate picture of weather at 07FA.
The AWOS installation was the final component of a years-long Airport safety enhancement project that took flight in 2019, and included other improvements like visibility, drainage, runway lighting and more.
Now, following the recent FAA endorsement, which confirmed 07FA’s AWOS was properly installed and meeting FAA criteria, all charter services and private Airport users will have access to the important weather information the AWOS provides.
Prior to take off, a pilot en route to or departing from 07FA can access the following real-time weather reports via the AWOS:
• Barometer
• Wind speed and direction
• Temperature
• Dew point
• Visibility
• Cloud height and sky condition
• Thunderstorm activity
• Precipitation accumulation
Pilots can easily access the AWOS information online via www.oceanreef.com/awos, by phone at 305-367-3013, or when in range, by radio on 119.025 MHz.
