Lovin’ the Lagoon

The Recreation Team helps Johnny and Bobby Laughton into a kayak.
If you were here last summer, you saw the first of the two-phase Buccaneer Island Lagoon project in process. The fence around the Lagoon lent a mystery to the rejuvenation as huge trucks traveled in and out while interesting noises were heard as the heavy work continued. In a short time the Lagoon was magically transformed into an enhanced and beautified space. An expanded beach, extensive landscaping, more parking for golf carts, and a shallower Lagoon became an upgraded destination.
Carly Laughton plays on the beach while her brothers enjoy the watersports.
For All Ages
Mike Neves, Buccaneer Island’s enthusiastic Pool Service Manager, is thrilled with the updated areas and he recently shared how many more Members are flocking to the Lagoon since the opening in October. He pointed out the new Lagoon dock filled with kayaks and paddleboards that are being well used by the older kids. More seating on the revived beach is often near capacity. And the zero entry shoreline has become a favorite place for younger children to take their bags of sand toys. I can agree that it is certainly a comfortable spot for grandparents to relax, too.
Clean and Clear
The Lagoon is a bit smaller, but much cleaner with a more natural turnover and continuous exchange of water with larger pipes that increase flow efficiency explained Mic O’Keeffe, Vice President of Sports & Amenities. This system, plus additional team maintenance will keep the Lagoon in great condition for years.
More to Do
Christopher Nelson, Assistant Director of Recreation, commented on the added activities offered at the Lagoon along with the paddle craft. The Rec Team has a planned event every morning at 11 AM and in the afternoons a bevy of inflatables are available. The Lagoon is a busy and happening place.
You Will Love It
If you have not ventured to the restored Lagoon yet, you are missing out on this special spot with an ocean view, lunch and drinks delivered to your beach chair, and the palm trees waving as the clouds fly by. Phase II is set for this summer with more enhancements.
