The Academy at Ocean Reef Celebrates
By Jody Steele
Closing up a most unusual school year, an eighth grade graduation and awards ceremony was held live on June 3rd at The Academy, accompanied by pre-recorded student choral ensembles. With limited attendance and social distancing, students and faculty were honored and appreciated for their achievements during the 2019-2020 school year.
Celebrating all students, from Pre-Kindergarten through Middle School was accomplished by a welcome from Jerome Murphy, Head of School who just arrived this school year. He certainly did not envision that his role would encompass months of distance learning and a ‘new normal” in educational leadership. Kudos to him for meeting the challenge and congratulations to the faculty for their commitment and dedication to the students.
The 2019-2020 Awards were presented as follows:
Dr. Why Award (named after Jim Leenhouts)
This is given to the student who consistently demonstrates curiosity and never stops asking why and how can we figure this out? Awarded to: Jackson Hill (Grade 1)
Perseverance Award
This award is given to the student who demonstrates initiative and perseverance in attaining goals while improving the life of others. Awarded to: Anna Fritter (Grade 6)
Scholar Athlete
Given to the student who achieves academic and athletic success, good sportsmanship, and achieves their intended goals. Awarded to: Angela Monzon (Grade 8)
The Jill Brown Award
Given to the student who embodies the essence of The Academy’s mission of respect, honesty, citizenship, and curiosity. Awarded to: Isabella Vasquez (Grade 6)
After each Academy graduate gave their own personal speech, Graduation Certificates were presented by Jerome Murphy and Russell Post, Board President. Congratulations to Mattie Johnson, Angela Monson, and Cannon Richardson.
Looking ahead to next school year, students and teachers are hoping to be able to be back to The Academy in their classrooms and enjoying the learning process together!
