The Academy Shines

Almost six months ago, Jerome Murphy became the Head of School at The Academy at Ocean Reef. His extraordinary leadership and enthusiasm has made the Academy “sparkle” with new initiatives, while retaining its educational excellence.
Character education is becoming a central theme at the Academy with emphasis on creating good citizens with outstanding values. The faculty intertwines lessons into the curriculum that focus on such ethics as commitment, compassion, tolerance, and respect. Developing critical thinking skills and instilling moral leadership qualities help promote good decision making and inspire Academy students to be the best they can be.
Technology is also an integral part of the Academy’s everyday learning. Jerome Murphy strongly believes that “digital citizenship” needs to be taught as a responsible trait. All of the students at the Academy have access to a digital device that is suitable for their age level. The higher grades are involved in a 3-D printing program that strengthens their creative skills
and deductive reasoning.
Community involvement is another initiative at the Academy. Working with our Public Safety Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and Island Dolphin Care is another worthwhile goal of expanding student awareness at Ocean Reef. One project for the Middle School students involves interviewing residents in the “Forget Me Nots” group and creating a presentation to share with classmates. This is certainly a valuable learning experience for all.
More congratulations to Jerome Murphy and faculty for completing the recent Florida Council of Independent Schools Five Year Accreditation process. This evaluation and seal of approval validates high standards for educational excellence. The entire faculty and leadership is honored to receive this well earned and distinctive accreditation.
On a yummy note, Jerome Murphy is known as the Cookie Man every Monday at the Academy lunch. For many years, he has made batches of chocolate chip cookies to share with his students. I understand that all of the children love the cookies, and the teachers tend to have one or even two of these delicious treats. I personally sampled the cookies and can attest to their deliciousness. What a sweet way to kick off the week!
Welcome again to the marvelous Mr. Murphy; his enthusiasm is contagious and this holiday season the Academy is shining brilliantly.
